Route Description


The cycle route EuroVelo 8 in the boundaries of the Region of Western Greece runs mainly through the coastal areas of Aetoloakarnania and Achaia passing mostly through areas of touristic interest (attractive nature, historical monuments, points of culture etc.). It has a total length of 291 Km consisting of eight daily sections of minimum length 32 Km and maximum length 50 Km.

In particular, the bicycle axis crosses Aitoloakarnania, starting from Sykoula and cycling to Amfilochia, nestled in the bay of the southern Amvrakikos gulf. From there, we ride to Vonitsa, heading to Mytikas, along the Ionian Sea. At the same time on our way with the lacy coasts of Xiromerou we reach the picturesque Astakos overlooking the beautiful islands of the Ionian Sea and continue for the small “Venice” of Greece, Aitoliko.

From Messolonghi we pass through the long cabled bridge of Rio-Antirio heading east to the capital of Aegiali, Aegio. The city is built amphitheatrically with a magnificent view of the Corinthian bay and we continue towards Akrata with its clean, pebbled beach and crystal clear waters. The cycling route ends at the eastern end of Achaia, Egira.

Please note that the herein described cycle route does not consist a separately designed and cosntructed cycle path. Cyclists should be aware that the road is commonly shared with vehicles of higher speed such as cars, trucks etc. and ride on their own risk.
